MAINSTAGE OPERAS & MUSICALS
I DO! I DO!
By Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt
Created for Robert Preston and Mary Martin, I Do! I Do! is a tender, 60-year journey through the married lives of Michael and Agnes. Laugh and cry with them as they navigate both the calm and turbulent seas of wedded life. Charming, witty, poignant and enlightening, I Do! I Do! will steal your heart with a brilliant score that includes “My Cup Runneth over with Love.”
By Stephen Temperley
In a Greenwich Village supper club in 1964, Cosmé McMoon flashes back to the musical career of Florence Foster Jenkins, a wealthy socialite with a famously uncertain sense of pitch and key. In 1932, she meets mediocre pianist Cosmé McMoon, and over the next dozen years, their bizarre partnership yields hilariously off-key recitals that become the talk of New York City. The play culminates in a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall in 1944 where McMoon has an epiphany and finally understands the transcendent power of music.
By Moisés Kaufman
A musical journey that simultaneously examines the creative process behind Beethoven's Diabelli Variations and the journey of a musicologist, Katherine Brandt, to discover the meaning behind why Beethoven was compelled to write thirty-three distinct variations on a simple theme by a minor music publisher. It chronicles the discovery of the soul for both Brandt, who has just been diagnosed with ALS and Beethoven in the declining moments of life.
By Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt
The longest-running musical of all time, written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, THE FANTASTICKS, is loosely based on Ovid’s Pyramus and Thisbe. It is the story of two neighboring fathers who connive to trick their children, Luisa and Matt into falling in love by pretending to feud. Will the wall that divides them stand? Will Luisa and Matt find true love? Watch THE FANTASTICS and find out!
CONCERTS & SPECIAL PERFORMANCES
A solemn masterpiece honoring those who have perished. Performed by the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra
“The American Festival Chorus is honored to present a performance of the Mozart Requiem as a gift to Michael Ballam for his extraordinary work in creating the Utah Festival and bringing the finest of musical performances to the stage of the Ellen Eccles Theatre for the last 30 years. Because of the generosity of anonymous local businesses and our many donors who have fully underwritten the event, we are pleased that the revenue from every ticket sold will help sustain one of Utah’s great artistic treasures, Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre. This special concert is also a memorial to all Utahns who have lost their lives to COVID. We hope this concert will bring comfort and a measure of peace to those who are mourning and will provide hope for a continued brighter future.”
– Craig Jessop, Music Director, American Festival Chorus & Orchestra
For more than 10 years, Utah Festival and American Festival Chorus have collaborated to produce Verdi Requiem, Beethoven Missa Solemnis, Mass in B Minor of Bach, Mozart Requiem, St. Matthew Passion of Bach, Carmina Burana of Orff, Sancta Civitas of Ralph Vaughan Williams and other masterworks.
